83 Billion Reasons

You have probably never wanted to hurt an animal.
Yet it happens on our plates.

Every year about 83 billion land animals are killed for food — most of them chickens. This page is not here to blame you. It is here to help line up what most of us already value — kindness to animals, a liveable planet, our own health — with what we eat every day. Every number is sourced, and our own estimates are labelled as such.

The goal isn’t perfect veganism. First, eat half as much meat. Then 70% less. If many of us get that far, 83 billion falls dramatically.

A note for readers outside Japan: this site was made in Japan. The world figures are global, but the Japan counter, the “average diet”, the car comparison, the calculators and the protein tables use Japanese data (MAFF statistics, IGES, Japan’s food composition tables). Your own country’s numbers will differ — in many high-income countries people eat more meat than in Japan, so cutting it can do even more.

This is about how my land and water — Earth’s — are used. The comparison may surprise you.

We grow plants, feed them to animals, then eat the animals. That detour is why livestock weighs so heavily on land, water and climate.

Deforestation has already been cut sharply when policy and demand change. Eating less beef and feed-fed meat buys the forest margin from its tipping point. Brazil is one of the world’s top exporters of beef, soy and chicken. The ~17% is for the whole basin (nearly 20% on the Brazilian side); the 20–25% danger zone is Lovejoy & Nobre’s (2018) assessment, and newer studies may differ.

結論The bottom line

Today’s meat-heavy diets and a livable planet cannot coexist.

“Technology will fix it.” “Clean energy is enough.” That is not what the research says.

Even with zero fossil fuels, food alone breaks 1.5 °C化石燃料の排出を今すぐ止めても、今の食料システムの傾向が続けば、1.5℃目標は達成できず、今世紀末には2℃目標も危うくなります。 Even if fossil-fuel emissions stopped today, current food-system trends would rule out 1.5 °C and threaten 2 °C by the end of the century. Beef and other red meat, and fertiliser, are major drivers.
Technology and less waste are not enough対策がなければ、食料の環境負荷は2010〜2050年に50〜90%増え、地球の限界を越えます。 Without action, food’s environmental pressures rise 50–90% from 2010 to 2050, beyond planetary limits. No single measure suffices, and climate change cannot be sufficiently mitigated without a shift to more plant-based diets — which alone cuts food emissions by more than half.
Food is behind most of the limits we’ve crossedすでに越えた7つの「地球の限界」のうち5つで、食料システムが主な原因です(気候では2番目)。 Of the seven planetary boundaries already crossed, the food system is the main driver of five (and the second-largest of climate). Only about 1% of people eat within the “safe and just space”.EAT–Lancet 委員会 2025

日本の平均と比べると――But it doesn’t take zero. The EAT–Lancet “planetary health diet” includes about 15 g of red meat and 30 g of poultry a day. Compared with Japan’s average:

Halving brings total meat close to the guide; 70% less brings red meat to its centre (15 g) too. What can’t coexist with the planet isn’t meat — it’s today’s amount.

Japan’s average converts MAFF’s FY2024 (provisional) per-person net food supply — beef 5.9 kg, pork 13.2 kg, chicken 14.9 kg a year — to a daily figure. It is supply, including waste in shops and homes, not what people actually eat. EAT–Lancet values are central targets with ranges (red meat 0–30 g, poultry 0–60 g). Fish, eggs and dairy are not shown. Clark et al. also find 2 °C reachable with less ambitious food changes — but only if fossil-fuel and other emissions are eliminated soon.

A diet good for the planet and for you

The EAT–Lancet “planetary health diet” (2019, 2,500 kcal a day).

Grouped from the reference diet table in Willett et al. (2019). Fats = vegetable oils, palm oil and lard; meat = beef, lamb, pork and poultry. The 2025 update keeps much the same shape — 500 g of fruit and vegetables, 75 g of legumes, red meat at most once a week — though grain and nut amounts changed; we use 2019 because we couldn’t check a 2025 calorie table.

Changing what we eat also buys time

We are in a race against tipping points — thresholds that, once crossed, can’t be uncrossed.

Warming is now about 1.4 °C. Warm-water coral reefs are reported to be passing their threshold (central estimate 1.2 °C). The Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets and abrupt permafrost thaw become likely to tip between 1.5 and 2 °C. Some, like the Amazon above, tip from deforestation and warming combined.

What matters is how high and how long temperatures peak. One modelling study finds that even a temporary overshoot raises the risk of cascading tipping by up to 72% compared with no overshoot.

Clean power and electric cars take decades, and cutting CO₂ doesn’t bring temperatures back down soon. Cutting methane can make the peak lower and shorter in the meantime — and what we eat can change at tonight’s dinner. That is what “buying time” means.

CO₂ lingers for centuries, so cutting it only stops warming from growing. Methane breaks down in about 12 years, so cutting it lowers warming itself within decades. Over 20 years, methane warms about 80 times more than the same mass of CO₂. About 32% of human-caused methane comes from livestock burps and manure. UNEP finds that cutting human methane 45% this decade would avoid nearly 0.3 °C of warming by the 2040s (including non-livestock measures). That sounds small — but tipping thresholds, like the reefs’ 1–1.5 °C, are measured in tenths of a degree.
CO₂ that could be absorbed if the world shifted to plant-based diets by 2050 and forest and grassland returned to pasture and feed land (Hayek et al. 2021) — about 1–1.6 times the remaining carbon budget for 1.5 °C. Few other measures both cut emissions and take back CO₂ already emitted. (That is a fully plant-based scenario; halving would deliver part of it.)

Average per person in Japan, per year (t CO₂e), spread over everyone — children and people without cars included.

Eating meat emits about as much as private car use. And these numbers leave out ①’s speed and ②’s land recovery. Cutting car use only applies to people who drive, but everyone chooses food three times a day, starting today. It helps animals and your own health at the same time. Of everything one person can do, it is among the biggest and most far-reaching.

Car figure: IGES “1.5-Degree Lifestyles” (2019, Japan), maximum per-person saving from switching private car trips to public transport. Cutting meat adds the plant foods that replace it (for soy, a small fraction of the meat’s footprint). IGES itself, using Japanese factors, puts the maximum saving from a vegetarian diet at ~0.34 t, lower than our estimate. All use 100-year warming potentials. Protein = Japan’s Standard Tables of Food Composition (8th ed., 2023 supplement) per 100 g × serving weight (soy mince dry; noodles and beans boiled). Cooking losses are ignored. For reference: 100 g skinless chicken breast 23.3 g, 100 g minced beef 17.1 g. Soy isoflavones (aglycone) use averages from Japan’s health ministry Q&A (2006); fried tofu, soy mince, tempeh, canned soybeans and edamame use values for similar foods. The 70–75 mg/day guide is from Japan’s Food Safety Commission: an upper limit for the long-term daily average, not a level at which harm starts.

Common questions

Fair questions.

It’s natural to have questions. Here are answers to the common ones, one by one.

Will I get enough protein?

Yes. Mix soy with other beans, wheat gluten (fu) and grains rather than relying on soy alone (to keep isoflavones moderate). One pack of natto (45 g) has about 7 g; 100 g of boiled lentils about 11 g. Try building a day in “You can do this” above.

What should I watch nutritionally?

Vitamin B12 is essentially absent from plants: take a supplement or fortified foods (some plant milks, cereals). This matters. Also keep an eye on calcium, vitamin D, iodine, omega-3s, iron and zinc. If you have a health condition, are pregnant, or are changing a child’s diet, talk to a doctor or dietitian.

Isn’t chicken or fish good enough?

They cut emissions compared with beef. But per gram of protein, chicken still emits about 3× as much as tofu and uses ~170× as many animals as beef. Fish bring feed, overfishing and bycatch problems, and by number they are the largest loss of life of all. Check the comparison chart above.

Is it pointless unless I quit completely?

No. The first half is the biggest step. The EAT–Lancet “planetary health diet” (2019) isn’t fully plant-based either: about 14 g of red meat a day (just under 100 g a week), 29 g of poultry and 28 g of fish. You don’t have to carry it all alone. Halve first, then 70% less — and go further as menus, canteens, prices and policy catch up.

What should I keep eating, if anything?

Honestly, everything has a cost. Beef and lamb are by far the heaviest for climate and land; chicken and fish by far the most animals (see the chart above). Processed meat is best avoided for health. When in doubt, don’t switch to one kind of meat — eat less of all of it, and fill the gap with beans, soy and grains.

Does one person really make a difference?

Meat is produced to meet demand. One choice looks small, but over a lifetime it adds up to hundreds of animals (see the calculator). And people around your table change too. Japan’s meat supply rose from about 7 kg per person in 1961 to about 60 kg in 2022 — diets change a lot within decades, and they can change back.

If it matters this much, why don’t we hear about it?

Several reasons overlap.

(Wynes & Nicholas 2017)。Advice is skewed. A study of government resources and textbooks in the EU, US, Canada and Australia found they focus on low-impact actions (recycling, lightbulbs) and largely omit high-impact ones such as a plant-based diet (Wynes & Nicholas 2017).
Big industries push back. Of 35 major meat and dairy companies, only four had clearly committed to net zero by 2050; large US firms lobbied heavily and funded groups that downplayed agriculture’s role in climate change (Lazarus et al. 2021).
Food is personal and cultural. Politicians avoid telling people what to eat.
Standard accounting understates methane. Warming is usually averaged over 100 years, which hides methane’s strong short-term effect (see “buying time” above).

Electric cars and clean power are needed too — it’s both, not either. There’s no need to blame anyone. Because few people know, the ones who do can go first.

What about people who work in livestock farming?

An important question. Shrinking animal farming should be a fair, gradual transition — not blaming farmers. Subsidies can shift toward beans, vegetables and plant-based foods, with support for farmers who switch. As demand grows, so do the jobs.

Haven’t humans always eaten meat?

We have. But the scale of 83 billion, and factory farming itself, are very recent. World meat production grew from 116 m t in 1975 to 367 m t in 2023 — far faster than population, which roughly doubled. Japan, too, ate very little meat for much of its history.

Starting today

It doesn’t have to be perfect. Start with half.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. Start with half — let’s begin together!

    STEP 1

Pick three plant-based dishes you already like

Bean chili, vegetable curry, pasta with lentil sauce, stir-fried tofu. You probably eat some already. Example days

    STEP 2

Halve your meat

Make half the week “plant days”. Cutting beef and processed meat first does the most for climate and health. Fill the gap with beans, soy and grains — not chicken.

    STEP 3

Once it feels normal, 70% less

Tastes and habits adjust within weeks to months. Meat moves from the centre of the plate to an occasional treat. As plant days add up, keep an eye on vitamin B12.

    STEP 4

Don’t carry it alone

Beyond that, let society catch up. Bring family and friends. Asking canteens and shops for plant-based options, and backing better policy with your voice and vote, changes far more than one plate.

First, eat half as much meat.
